The Amish are known for their lifestyle that excludes many modern marvels and their agriculture seems to follow suit. The Amish are now "reinventing" organic farming. Samuel Zook is a farmer who looks like a farmer we want to buy our food from. He wears a straw hat and suspenders; there is no need to wear a chemical safety body suit around his food. Eight years ago the crops on his farm were failing and a realistic solution was to use pesticides. However, he searched for a better and safer solution. After reading articles from an eighteen year old Ohio farmer, John Kempf, he began to follow Advancing Eco Agriculture.
Advancing Eco Agriculture puts an emphasis on the health of the plant itself rather than its predators. Through biology, chemistry, and agronomy studies the scientists have been able to better understand a specific plant's immune system. Therefore, instead of using fertilizers to increase nutrients, Kempf is able to analyze a plant and decide what minerals are lacking in the soil. With proper nutrients the plant will be able to fend off predators and flourish with no need for pesticides. Advancing Eco Agriculture has been spreading through the world and is used in certain areas of North America, South America, Europe, Hawaii, and Africa.
Hopefully this type of farming continues. To me it makes a lot of sense since we want to treat our bodies the same way. For example, if we have a cold isn't it better to eat a little extra vitamin C from an orange than head to the nearest medicine cabinet?
